Children with Disabilities

Disability affects about 15% of people in the UK at some time in their lives. The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) protects disabled children and young people from discrimination. The DDA describes a person as disabled if he/she has a physical or mental impairment, which has a substantial, long term and adverse effect on the person's ability to carry out normal day to day activities.

If you work with a child or young person who has a disability the future may seem like a real struggle, not just for them, but for their parents/carers too. They however are not alone. If a child/young person is disabled, their parents/carers may be entitled to receive some financial help to support them in caring for their child. There are also many other extra services and support available for the child/young person and their parents/carers.

If you are concerned that a child/young person may have a disability which has not yet been diagnosed, advice the parent/carer to seek advice and help from their health visitor or GP. Support and advice the parents/carers to make contact with services and get the support they need.
