Young carersWho is a young carer?A young carer is someone aged between 5-18 who helps to look after and care for someone they live with who has a physical disability, mental illness, serious illness, drug or alcohol problem.What is the Young Carers Project?The Wandsworth Young Carers Project works with children and young people aged 5-18 years who provide care (physical and/or emotional) for a family member who has a physical disability, mental illness, serious illness, drug/alcohol dependency or HIV/Aids.The project aims to ensure that you, as a young carer, receive some support and that you have the opportunity to have a break from your caring role and meet children and young people with similar circumstances. The project divides all the young carers who come the project in different groups according to your age. This way the activities that you will do will be more suitable for your age group. There are 4 different age groups:
Depending on the level of support that you need, you might be able to attend a club every other week, at least once a month or even more often. The project might also have extra social activities and support groups or workshops during the school holidays. They also would like to offer individual family support and advice where possible. At the moment there are three trips away from home each year. How to join inIt is free to join. You can let us know you want to join by phoning yourself or someone like your GP or another support agency can also call for you.
