Financial support

If you are an eligible young person, i.e. remain looked after, then your financial support remains the same.

If you are 16/17 years of age and are a relevant young person, the Children’s Services will pay for your accommodation, and will pay you weekly money equivalent to the amount that you would have received on benefits. We will also assist you financially to achieve your educational goals, which have been agreed and set out in your Pathway Plan. If you are a lone parent or a young person with disabilities then you are able to claim Income Support or Job Seeker’s Allowance.

If you are over 18 years of age and are a formally relevant young person you are entitled to claim benefits like any other person. If you are in education we will assist you with some of your costs. This can last beyond the age of 21 until the time you have completed your course provided that it has already been agreed and is in your Pathway Plan. This does not mean that we will pay for everything, we will explain the help we will give and in what circumstances.

If you are between16 and 21, who stopped being looked after or accommodated in a variety of settings after the age of 16 you will be a Qualifying young person. We may be able to help you with assistance for education and training. If you are in higher education or residential Further Education we will support you to find or pay towards vacation accommodation.
