How are you feeling today?
Most people would say … 'alright', 'not too bad', some of us might say 'I feel good', 'things are great', while others may say they feel a bit depressed, stressed or 'down in the dumps’. How we feel depends on many things such as what day of the week it is, if we’ve got something to look forward too like a holiday or a night out with friends, whether it's sunny and warm or cold and raining or even if we have a new pair of trainers, sunglasses or the latest mobile phone.
What we can be sure of is that we all have times when we feel depressed, stressed or anxious, it’s a natural part of being a human. But there are also times in life when we may struggle to get over these feelings and find ourselves constantly under strain. This may be due to moving away from friends or being bullied, a relationship breakdown or losing someone close. Some people may not have a specific reason for feeling down, it may just be because they do.
We are very good at getting help when we are ill, taking a paracetamol for a headache or to ease period pains, using an inhaler to help with asthma or taking a prescribed course of antibiotics to treat an infection. When it comes to our mental health it’s a different story, we are expected to just 'snap out of it', 'get over it' or 'deal with it' whatever the 'it' may be.
There is one thing that we can be sure of, feeling good about yourself is a big factor in keeping healthy. The following tips from other young people offer some positive suggestions to help you cope during the low points.
